CA / MAGNA POWDER A recent Los Angeles Sheriff's Department homicide case was leading to a dead end. Suspect(s) were unknown and no witnesses to the double homicide had been found. The only potential witness was the registered owner of a vehicle taken in a carjacking and then used in the crime. The vehicle had been found at the scene and processed for latent prints, but no suspects could be linked to the vehicle. At the scene two (2) pairs of latex gloves had been found and collected. Later the gloves were transported to the crime lab for chemical processing. The case was assigned to Forensic Identification Specialist, Fred Roberts, and he processed the gloves with cyanoacrylate, magna powder and RAM. The results on the first pair processed was negative, the second pair was another story. After super gluing for approximately twenty-five minutes, the gloves were examined and then gently dusted with magna powder. Several latent prints were lifted. All the latents were matched to the alleged victim of the carjacking. The victim to the carjacking is now the prime suspect to a double homicide. It is thought that two pairs of gloves were worn at the same time and that the hands perspired profusely. The heavy perspiration and a tight fit caused by a second pair of gloves may be responsible for producing the latents which have an abundance of ridge detail of extremely high clarity.
