CAL-ID Assists In Solving A Homicide (The following is an article which appeared in Minutiae Muse, a Publication by the Los Angeles County Regional Identification System, April 1994)
The South Gate Police Department requested assistance from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Homicide Investigators Gilbert Carrillo and Ken Gallatin were dispatched to the scene, along with Scientific Services Bureau Crime Scene Investigators Deputy Nick Abbinanti and Forensic Identification Specialist Bill Leo. Several latent prints were developed at the scene. The duct tape to bind the victim's wrist was taken to Scientific Services Bureau for processing. A latent print was developed on the tape by Senior Criminalist Karla Taylor. The latent print from the duct tape and several others from the scene were traced and entered into the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) by Forensic Identification Specialist Barbara Phillips. The print from the duct tape hit in the DOJ AFIS and was identified to Carlos Medrano. Based on this information, homicide investigators arrested Medrano. With the arrest of Medrano, homicide investigators developed information that led them to two other suspects, a Luis Garcia and a Jorge Sosa. Sosa's fingerprint was identified from a latent lift taken from the victim's glasses. Due to the CAL--ID hit, (from the duct tape), three suspects have been arrested for this brutal murder and all three have been charged with first degree murder with special circumstances.
